Mediaworks’ Craig Bradshaw completes Yorkshire Marathon in aid of charity

Along with more than 6000 runners, our very own Craig Bradshaw took on the Yorkshire Marathon on October 20th to raise money for a charity close to his heart.

Set in the picturesque surroundings of York city – starting and finishing at the University of York and passing the city walls, York Minster and the famous Betty’s tea rooms – the 26.2 mile (42km) route was just as gruelling as any other, with participants from across the globe taking part. Kenyans Edwin Korir and Helen Koskei won the men’s and women’s races, with Craig impressively finishing 18th overall, with a personal best (PB) of 2:46.

“It was a new PB by 3 minutes,” said Craig, head of outreach at Mediaworks. “I was aiming for 2:45 but by the end I was just happy to finish. My girlfriend Claire, mum, dad and brother came along to support me, as well as the phenomenal support along the course. My name was on my race number so I got people cheering me on by name, which was nice.”

To get ready for the marathon, Craig followed a 16 week plan consisting of one long run, one tempo run and one gruelling sprint session each week. “This way my body gets used to the unique demands of a marathon,” he explains. “I also tend to eat a bit cleaner before my runs, so that everything I eat is going to be giving me good-quality nutrients; I save the unhealthy stuff like brownies, doughnuts and burgers etc. as a recovery treat.”

His chosen charity was the Stroke Association, which he raised over £460 for. Along with generous donations from his friends and family, Craig also raised £85 from the folk at Mediaworks with his delicious baking. Treats devoured by the office included salted caramel brownies, cheesecake brownies and vanilla cupcakes.

Craig said: “My girlfriend’s dad had a stroke four years ago, and the amount of information and support the Stroke Association gave him was astounding. They were also there to help Claire through the transition, so I was more than happy to put one foot in front of the other for the charity.”

At Mediaworks, we are also doing our bit for our chosen charity Macmillan this year. Over the last few months we have raised in excess of £3500, taking part in everything from the Macmillan Coffee Morning – which also featured Craig’s baking – to those brave souls who went zipsliding across the Tyne in August.

It is almost Movember time again too, with a selection of Mediaworks staff already getting a head start on their facial hair growth. Craig is part of the moustachioed men taking part and will also be carrying on his charity calendar of events with the Brass Monkey Half Marathon in January.
