Mediaworks Game of Thrones Golf Day

The Starks and Lannisters descended on Close House for Mediaworks annual golf day on Friday 1st September 2017. This was no ordinary game of golf, with challenges including closest to the pin, chip through the White Wall, hit Joffrey, longest drive, archery and axe throwing.

The main event was the ‘Iron’ golf throne which contenders eagerly had their photo taken on before hitting the course. The masterpiece was built by Michael Walsh, our Communications Director Jayne Parsley-Walsh’s father. It was built using 167 golf clubs donated by St Oswald’s Hospice charity shops, Esh Group, Close House and friends and family from many social media pushes. The throne took three months to build and took three people to lift and transport the colossal creation to Close House.

Before going out on the course, mulligans were purchased, raising vital funds for St Oswald’s Hospice, who provide specialist care to adults, young people and children with life-limiting conditions in the North East of England. With bacon butties consumed and mulligans at the ready, the golfers dispersed into teams beginning their 18-hole adventure in a match play format.

The champion of longest drive was Marc Cranston of the House Lannister and a further two lucky Lannisters managed to conquer the nearest pin, with winning shots from Matthew Ord and Paul Hood.

With their flags at the ready and dragons circling the air (in the form of helium balloons) the teams showed their skill at axe throwing and archery to determine which colour hole they would tee off from.

Once everyone had made the journey around the course, we made our way in for the awards to find which house deserved to sit on the ‘Iron’ golf throne. House Lannister won the battle against House Stark, securing their place on the throne for another year and winning a bottle of Hepple gin for each team member!

Much to everyone’s delight, the feast arrived and drinks were flowing as both houses made a truce.

Thanks to the combination of good weather and good company, the day was a total success.

Plans for next year’s golf day are already underway – so golfers best get practicing. Who knows what the theme will be next year!
