Design and Development for The Royal Mint: The Great British Coin Hunt case study

The Royal Mint were looking for a mobile app to coincide with and enhance their Great British Coin Hunt. Twenty-six special, British-themed coins were put into circulation as part of the campaign, one for each letter of the alphabet. The aim of the app was to let users track their coin collection and buy extra coins from the The Royal Mint website to complete their collection.

We created a streamlined experience using our in-house app development team. It allowed users to scan coins with their phone camera and store them in a digital wallet. The app used machine learning and a neural network to help achieve the coin scanning successfully. A map was also included to show locations of coin drops, scans, and events such as swap shops.

We added gamification elements to the app to add value, offering evergreen content to engage users that might be dipping in and out of the GBCH as it progresses. This came primarily in the form of the Create-a-Coin feature, celebrating coin design and tapping into the creativity of the public. Users were prompted to design their own coins using a set of ready-made assets, design elements, and coin templates. By dragging and dropping these elements, users could create cool designs, name their creations, and save them to a digital wallet.
