Do ChatGPT Ads have a place in your media mix?

ChatGPT Ads put your brand in the conversation where a buying decision is being made. The scale is already there: more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, and its ads are live in 89 countries, including the UK. But does the channel add anything your search and social budgets don't already deliver?

Early results are promising, yet the answer depends on measuring what ChatGPT Ads add, not what they claim at the last click.

Fast growth, with one catch

Ads launched in the US in February 2026, Ads Manager went self-service in May, and UK advertisers have been able to buy since June. By October, more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns, and in August the ad business hit a $1 billion annualised run rate, a measure of pace, not revenue banked.

The audience you can buy is smaller than 1.2 billion, though. Ads only reach eligible users on the Free and Go plans, so Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers never see them.

You bid on context, not keywords

ChatGPT has no keywords to buy: it matches ads using the context of a conversation alongside the ad itself, its landing page, the advertiser's context hints and other targeting signals. You can reach people around a specific need, but context hints don't guarantee placement against any particular prompt.

The toolkit is catching up with search fast. Bidding options, custom audiences, conversion measurement and location targeting are already in place, with postcode-level targeting available in some markets. Product-feed campaigns are in beta, and Sponsored Agents are in limited testing with selected advertisers.

Built for the middle of the decision

GWI's October 2026 Zeitgeist data shows what UK respondents mainly use AI tools for: answering questions (41.6%), research (40.3%) and shopping recommendations (12.6%). The figures cover AI tools in general, not ChatGPT alone, yet the pattern holds: people turn to AI while they're still working out what they want. That's where shortlists get made, and where ChatGPT Ads are likeliest to earn their keep.

Every pound has to earn its place

A buyer might meet your brand in a ChatGPT ad, check reviews on Google a week later and convert on your website. Another might start with search and let ChatGPT settle the comparison. Each channel plays its part, so judge ChatGPT Ads on what they add to that sequence and let search keep doing the job it does best.

With most digital spend already sitting with Google and Meta, budget is the real test: every pound moved to ChatGPT has to buy something search and social don't.

Early results look strong, on the advertisers' own numbers

  • Angi (home services): 34% lower cost per lead after moving to conversion-optimised campaigns, and return on ad spend up more than 38% from Q2 to Q3. Both compare against its own earlier activity, not Google Ads.

  • Talkpal (language learning): around 26% higher return on ad spend and 51% lower cost per trial activation than an established native ad channel, over separate reporting periods.

  • Stream (developer tools): roughly 2x return on ad spend from a June-to-August test with a specialist B2B audience.

All three are selected results published by OpenAI. Read them as proof the channel can convert, not as a forecast of your returns.

Last click will undersell it

In a geo-lift study for wellness brand Dose, WorkMagic estimated that ChatGPT Ads drove 2.3 times more incremental orders than last-click attribution captured. One advertiser's result proves nothing platform-wide, but it shows the risk: judge ChatGPT on clicks alone and you may cut a channel that does its work before anyone clicks.

How to test it properly

Pick one proposition where buyers compare options before committing. Brief the platform with detailed context hints and send clicks to a page that answers the questions buyers ask at that stage. Have conversion tracking live before you spend, using first-party data only where UK consent rules allow.

Then judge it on enquiries, customers and revenue. Benchmark against paid search with care, because the two reach people at different levels of intent. If budget and conversion volume allow, a geographic holdout or lift study will show whether the channel created demand or claimed it. Either way, give the test as long as your buying cycle needs.

How we approach ChatGPT Ads

We treat ChatGPT Ads as one part of an integrated search and paid media strategy. That starts with where your audience uses AI and whether the channel suits your proposition, then a test judged on business outcomes. Organic visibility in ChatGPT's answers is a separate job, as paid ads have no influence on what ChatGPT recommends.
