The Mediaworks team have ended the week in the best way — winning App of the Year at the Prolific North Awards 2019 last night for Bee in the City! The win celebrates our on going partnership with Wild in Art.

In the summer of 2018, over 100 individually designed super-sized Bees and over 130 equally artistic little Bees, designed and painted by artists, were positioned across the entire city of Manchester for 10 weeks. The trails were designed to encourage people to explore the city, improve health and wellbeing as well as drive economical growth to the city. Alongside the trail there were various initiatives ran by Wild in Art with schools and local community groups.

To support the trail Mediaworks designed and developed an app that would help track engagement and also enhance the overall experience of the trail.

Those who downloaded the app could track down and unlock Bee sculptures in a bid to collect them all. Some of the sculptures even revealed offers and prizes that players could redeem across the city whilst on the trail.

The app featured an augmented reality Bee, pedometer, and integration with outdoor digital screens meaning selfies taken in the app could then be displayed on all outdoor media across the entire city, making our players famous!

Upon its release, the app received almost 20,000 downloads. As well as this, we saw over 1.2 million bees unlocked and over 24 million steps walked.

Creative Director at Mediaworks, Andrew Blenkinsop, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the win last night and are thankful for the recognition received from Prolific North. We are continuously working with WIA to understand how new technologies can help improve the overall experience for players on the trail and cant wait to see where go next”.

After the trail had ended, many sculptures were auctioned off to raise money for the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s We Love MCR Charity to improve the lives of youth in the local community.
